Materialists

I know I’m in the minority, but I left the movie loving the message it sent that money won’t buy you love and happiness. While some think that the movie promotes settling, I think it promotes not settling and instead finding love even if it’s not perfect. One of the problems though was how much chemistry Dakota Johnson’s character had with Pedro Pascal’s character. But I felt like they conveyed how much more she bonded with Chris Evan’s character when she would confide in him and couldn’t confide in her boyfriend.

Something must’ve been wrong for so many people to miss the message of the movie instead, making me wonder if there was something they could’ve done better with the film--such as not casting Pedro Pascal in his role. He was too good of an option that most women wouldn’t say no too, leaving people unable to relate to Dakota’s choice.

I enjoyed the movie enough to still think about it a few days later. Going into the movie blind without seeing anyone else’s opinion helped me to inform my own, so I was shocked to see the discourse online. I’d probably watch it another time, then forget about it.
