Call The Shots

Call The Shots by Bree Hayden

Call The Shots follows June and Bear, two people who hates each other but are forced together by awful circumstances. June’s ex, who happens to be Bear’s stepbrother, has ousted her from her housing. Taking a job with the school’s hockey team, June ends up having to share a room with Bear, who believes she is a stalker who made up a relationship with her stepbrother, since they hadn’t met before.

While I wouldn’t classify it as enemies-to-lovers, and I struggle to use that term in contemporary, I’d definitely say it is a hate-to-love story. The book is very long for a hockey romance, but I never grew bored of the story. I waited patiently for June’s ex to get what he deserved. I waited to watch the hockey team do something about their predicament with the university (the university doesn’t plan to keep them; the couch sucks) but since the book took place during the summer, nothing happened. With the book being over 500 pages, I expected a longer timeline with something happening on pages for the team, but alas, I must wait for future books.

I was completely sold on June and Bear’s hateful relationship, and them gravitated toward each other despite that. After all, Bear can’t find a girl to hookup with because his nudes had been leaked and he was tired of people recognizing him, and June happened to be there and unable to find a guy to trust to hookup with.

Call The Shots had spice, tension, and an engaging plot that kept me reading nonstop until I was finished, unable to put the book down. My only complaint about the spice was how quickly the scenes wrapped up and lacked some details, but Bear had a premature problem I loved and he reeked of desperate MMC.

Rating: 4.5/5

Spice: 2.5/5
