Doppelbanger

Doppelbanger by W.H. Lockwood

While searching the multiverse for another version of himself that can help him with a physics problem, physicist August instead finds himself as a karate teacher. Separated by the point of view of “Good August” and “Bad August,” Doppelbanger beautifully tells the story of a man falling for…an alternate version of himself? Author W.H. Lockwood manages to make each August stand on their own, even when we’re presented with more of them, which shows their immense writing talent.

Doppelbanger is a book that’ll keep you laughing the whole time while reading because you must find out what is going to happen next. What happens when two characters fall in love, but they can’t be in the same universe together? You’ll have to read to find out how the author makes the pieces of the puzzle fit together. I was on edge the entire time with a desperate need to know how it ended for our strange couple.

It’s a little on the slow burn side, but once the spice picks up, it never ends. Every time the side characters showed up, I laughed nonstop as they all debated if fucking yourself counts as incest. It’s a unique, fresh relationship pairing that the author writes well. The relationship forming between the two characters feels organic rather than forced. There’s a funny beginning where Good August is being stalked by himself. Overall, this story is unique, refreshing, and whimsical. I’d read a million more stories like this, but no one could quite tell it exactly like W.H. Lockwood.
